XMPP and/or Matrix ?

Waking up on the 1rst of January, I decided to ask you rather than hesitating three more months. I've been reading around this question and I can't make my mind.
I want to start using a decentralized messaging app, supporting messages encryption. I'm balancing between XMPP and Matrix (or both, if it makes sense).
