Research careers in cybersecurity

Are there people here who have research and development jobs in cybersecurity ? I always here of people in offensive / defensive sides or working on the IT unit of a company but those are mostly in non-tech companies. If you are working on research, what is your job about ? What tasks do you typically have ? What technologies do you use ? I'm thinking of the people who work on say securing Tesla cars, developing biometric systems etc... …
