Best way to protect home from break-ins?

I’m a new home owner with a family, looking for some advice from people with experience here. Firstly, can anyone suggest a camera that doesn’t connect to the wifi? Or something that hosts itself?

Also, in regards to other devices besides surveillance what are some good options for prevention/detection? (I’m in Canada so anything defence related is a no no)
