YouTube/google want a photo of my ID or my credit card info for age verification?

Never had this problem ever until a few months ago, it's annoying as hell as i get hit with the verify your age even for videos that don't have any reason to be. I find this really suspect and I really want to watch things again. Should I do it? I'm so suspicious of this and I'm wondering if this is even legal? They straight up asked for a photo of my ID/credit card details for age verification.
