Xiaomi router + OpenWrt = Privacy?

Xiaomi devices (honestly, much like many western products) tend to spy on you, I am almost certain that by default, a Xiaomi router will call back home.

Installing OpenWrt should theoretically give privacy from the software side, but should I worry about the hardware? From what I see, Xiaomi uses a Qualcomm CPU and I don't see anything that could indicate a hardware backdoor.
