Winrar or 7zip. Which of these offer safer or better options for password protected archives? I know winrar says it offers password protection and encrypted file names, but how secure is this really?

What is the best option to compress and password protect a folder for long storage on an external device. For example securing files on an external hard drive so they are not immediately accessible if someone ever steals the drive and plugs it in to their computer.
