Why isn't there virus protection for Chrome/Edge extensions?

It seems that web extensions in general are a jarring security flaw in modern computing. We have to give them total permission of our web browser usually, and they can be updated at any time with malicious code. There's no program that detects malicious code in extensions when they update. I don't see regular virus protection being able to detect something like this.
