Privacy & Freedom in the Information Age www.reddit.com

I recently started removing permissions from a lot of apps and in the case of the Message app I removed every other permissions except SMS and contacts. But when I tried opening it, it asked for phone/call permissions. I can still receive messages which I can read in the notifications but I am unable to open the whole message. Is phone call permissions is necessary for a messaging app when I have already given it SMS(messaging) and Contacts permissions?
