Privacy & Freedom in the Information Age www.reddit.com

WhatsApp is known for taking some meta data including users IP address and telephone number from it's customers but what exactly is the situation with the "message content"? Is this ever unencrypted or "unencryptable" by WhatsApp at any stage between the sender and recipient?

Edit: As a matter of interest I've noticed that https://www.securemessagingapps.com/ doesn't have any information/review about WhatsApp?

Edit: I've come across this article from ArsTechnica one of the most trusted authorities on this type of subject.
