What is the best way to monitor network traffic to insure security and prevention of attacks?

I had experienced a network breach recently and since then i want to protect my network by monitoring and preventing using tools like IDS/IPS. I just started my cybersecurity studies so i do understand some aspects.

Constantly monitoring my network via wireshark seems difficult as the pcap files are so large. Please help me with this.
