What is safer/more private, smartphones or laptops?

I currently have a cheapish Android phone and an older laptop with Windows. With care and additional security put on them, which would be safer to do most tasks? I'd go back to a flip phone and only use it as a phone if smartphone security/data selling is as bad as I've been reading.
