What are they doing with everyone's data?

I get it, information is gonna be bigger than oil. Everything I interact with online is tracking me and has a profile of me. I understand that my car's wifi is pinging all the routers I pass leaving a trail of where I've been. Then, these companies use this information to try and effectively advertise to me.
