What are the Signal alternatives we can use as default SMS app?

Pretty much what the title says. On one hand I understand why signal is removing support for sms. But I'm not going to use Google Messages as the default sms application. Even if I'm not sending any SMS, there are still messages I receive which I want Google to stay away from. I wish I could opt out but that's a hard one.
