What are some easy privacy actions that one can take?

Every software says they're private and secure. It's the new catchphrase. Finding out which one is really private requires time that I don't have. The constant research to tell if a software is private in the first place, coupled with constant viewing of the news to check if any of these softwares have been hacked, sold, or turned isn't worth it to me.
