What are Signal alternatives that don't require a phone number?

Session, if it worked properly, is nice. But most of the time you don't get notified of msgs and calls regardless of whether you got push notification enabled or not. You'd have to open the app to see the msgs (and I think sometimes it doesn't show missed calls).
