VPN for privacy from government surveillance, pointless ?

I've been using my own L2TP/IPsec setup on a small VM I spun up via a VPS. It's served me well but I'm preparing to scrap it and build a new one, this time using WireGuard to see if there's a difference in speed but mainly just to learn about how it works since I've only ever really worked with L2TP and IPsec.
