Starting a "Research and Development" role.... what does that mean?

Basically I have just accepted an offer to work for a company's cyber security department on the research and development team. The hiring process was brief and I basically have no idea what I'm going to be doing. I know that I'll be working with the SOC and threat hunting team, but I have never heard of an R&D role in cyber security so I'm curious if this is a common role that's just new to me or …
