Software for recording security incidents?

The company that I’m going in to round two for interviews does not have any sort of way they’re recording incidents or trends. They are using a SIEM which I’m sure has something there but she mentioned that it’s not doing a well enough job.

I’m creating a 30-60-90 day plan and wanted to suggest something other than MS Excel (lol) that is maybe free or open source or cheap that could help keep us within regulation. Any suggestions?
