Reliance on Pentesting Tools

Hello everyone, I'm currently studying pentesting, and a question came to mind. In the realm of pentesting, there seems to be a heavy reliance on tools. For instance, we use specific tools for password cracking, active information gathering, and even for the actual hacking process. Is it beneficial to be so dependent on these tools? What would we do if these tools were to disappear?
