Protections to make sure you’re not a target to be hacked?

A friend of mine had someone hack in and attempt to steal his identity. He’s still working through it, but it has got me thinking. He’s had has email hacked as well as has had money withdrawn from his account and also ported his phone number so he was locked out of his account.
