Problem solving skills for cybersecurity

The main problem that I have is that I am sometimes unable to connect the dots between the hints that are given to me. I also suck at solving puzzles.
This is a huge liability in the CTF challenges and I end up giving up too quickly.
So, I'd like to work on basic aptitude and problem solving skills.
