I live in India. People here use UPI for payments (somewhat similar to Venmo and PayPal) nearly everywhere. Some people here even refuse cash, as it is a hassle to manage. I obviously cannot have exact change at me at all times, and have resorted to using UPI.

However, the most popular UPI Apps in the industry are Google Pay, PhonePe, PayTM, etc. None of which have a good track record for privacy.
