My granddaughter and I want to text. Her Facebook Messenger for Kids fails probably because of my privacy settings. Any safe alternatives?

Facebook Messenger on my Android phone doesn't have any special restrictions but I have the Facebook account that they automatically set up running behind Firefox's fence. This is likely the problem. I want to keep my privacy settings and addons in both Firefox and Vivaldi. What I would like is to STAY AWAY from Facebook altogether. I have never used it. Can we do that in a safe-for-kids way on her iPad? I am not well informed about social apps …
