Privacy & Freedom in the Information Age www.reddit.com

Could someone please explain how Legitimate Interest works ? Does it mean they can take certain info without your consent ? I was surprised to come across it in a FOSS app. I'm in California btw if hat has any bearing on the answer. Thanks.
