Is XMPP servers trust worthy?

So I've been on a quest for a good privacy respecting chat/messaging service that also doesn't suck on desktop, that has been quite hard on the later, yeah yeah signal is secure, as is session, etc etc, but they totally suck on desktop and nobody can tell me otherwise, many others have failed this test.
