Is there any non-complicated way to stop personal data being collected about oneself without restricting too much?

I have literally 0 knowledge on this subject, and the other privacy subreddits are locked. I have tried searching this question in this subreddit, but answers were unconclusive or too complicated for me to understand, even with tons of research. Should this be an eli5 question instead?
