Is network engineering a good precursor to security?

Cybersecurity is my end goal, and I'm aware this field is mostly high-level work. I'm currently trying to get into any network engineering role that I can (currently sysadmin). I've also started studying for my CCNP (recently obtained my CCNA), as I'm trying to get a good understanding of networking.
