Is it worth getting lower level certs to prove fundamental knowledge, or should I just go big with CISSP and the like?

I can immediately go for CISSP & GCIH, or I can get A+, Sec+, Net+, etc. My question is, will employers care enough about the lower certs to make it worth the effort?

My contract is ending in a year, so I have an opportunity to set myself up for success.
