Is it really worth it to pay for a custom email domain?

For what I know, you seem to be basically stuck paying a subscription until basically the rest of your life unless you move everything that is set to go to that email. Am I wrong and it is worth it? I want to get one it’s just I don’t want to be stuck in something like this.
