Is it normal for a SOC to monitor physical security too?

I've been in the SOC for 6 years as a SOC/CSIRT analyst for 3 different companies. My current company is asking the SOC/CSIRT to do physical security in addition to cyber security. They don't want to spend money on security guards so they invested in cameras and alarms.
