I know that hiding the SSID doesn't really make things more secure because any tool can still see the hidden network.

However, you have to configure windows to try and connect anyways if the SSID is not seen - as I understand, this causes windows to basically broadcast "Hey I'm trying to connect to 'x'" & would do this anywhere, at home, coffee shop, airport, etc.
