Is having a LinkedIn account really necessary/good idea?

On the one hand I don't like the idea of having all my employment history just visible to everyone.
On the other hand, perhaps employers kind of expect that you have one and will review your linkedin before they interview you. Would it be a possible red flag if you didn't have one?
