Is an antivirus really necessary on android?

I use bitdefender on android, I have it mainly for the habit of having an av and I don't use web protection since it doesn't sound right to have it look through everything I search, but is an av really necessary on your phone? Does it provide real safety that gives you more benefits than the lack of privacy?
