Is a password manager really necessary?

Might be a dumb question but I don't understand the idea of creating complex passwords and then giving them to a random company. Can I trust them?

Why not simply keeping all passwords in a notebook at home? Personally I don't mind the extra effort of having to enter all passwords on my own when I log in into my accounts.
