Apparently they announced the switch to ID.me in November with full implementation by Summer 2022: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/new-identity-verification-process-to-access-certain-irs-online-tools-and-services
I started the process to open an online account with ID.me and their Privacy Policy is sketchy af. They store your ID, passport or passport card along with the photo you have to take to verify your identity, which may be shared with additional third parties. Wtaf.
