In Security Archi/Engineering - was told that BH/Defcon and SANS training was only for SOC team

I currently work in a security architecture and engineering team and I requested to attend some trainings this year that included Black Hat and Defcon. Though most of the red team/pentesting/EH stuff was under our SOC division it still pays to know the red team stuff even if our role was in security archi/engineering.
