If internet isn't encrypted how can someone stole my passwords or something else if it gets send in plain text?

Does that mean it can be captured on the same network what you are using (Home network) at the same time with user who does not have good intentions in mind or that it can be captured anywhere when password send from your computer to the destination (hacker in russia while you are in america)?
