How should society handle the need for pseudonyms for privacy without getting too authoritarian?

Pseudonyms do have a time and a place, especially for privacy, but incidents like this will certainly get some people to demand real names for everything which obviously doesn't work as people think; but of course, society is not all clear-cut black and white.
