How secure is cellphone data?

Would using my cellphone data plan be considered more secure than random public WiFi? This seems to make intuitive sense to me, but I thought I would check.

In terms of security/privacy, would using my cellphone data plan be considered as secure as a password-protected trusted WiFi connection?
