How does the Discord-Matrix Bridge work?

I mainly don't want Discord installed on my PC or phone.

Can you recieve and send messages+photos from Matrix without having Discord installed or even not having to use it?

What other privacy benefits does this provide? I only use Discord because I run a community for my Minecraft Server which is necessary.

And are there any good tutorials to learn how to set this up
