How can I disable my webcam for work from home monitoring without my employer finding out I did it intentionally?

I work from home, and my employer likes to play big brother and watch us through our webcam during all working hours. We work in virtual machine environments. Is there a way to somehow disable the webcam and claim "it's broken" or "idk what's wrong."
