GPS navigation devices like garmin

I am new to this and am wanting to reduce how much I am tracked. I need a good GPS to get around I drive a lot in both rural and very urban areas. I hadn't found much discussion of privacy with these types of devices mostly the watches. I have tried the open source apps that have been recommended here and they are completely unusable for me.
