Going to sound like a complaining old man, but why do younger people seem like they could care less about learning how networks work?

I keep coming across young people that were handed degrees, that know hardly any things about networking. Most of them hardly have enough skills to monitor IDS and IPS. When requesting that they do professional development, learning is never done. I have watched better people come from the Help Desk, as they at least are people who had to work learning these things.
