Getting a new email address as spam is out of control. Anything specifically I need to consider?

Seems that phishing and spam emails aren't getting filtered anymore by Microsoft and I've finally had enough.

Outside of the general housekeeping to-do's (update email addresses for subscriptions and accounts etc) is there any thing else I should do?

If anyone else has done this in the past, have you totally deleted the original account, or kept it?
