FIDO U2F - why, how, where, for whome???

Time to set this up? I'm a regular, non-technical, privacy and security conscious user. Bitwarden, GrapheneOS, tutanota, 2FA thru FreeOTP+ wherever I can.

Is a Yubikey really something worth while or more an extra security for someone who will wear a belt AND suspenders?

I'm not really understanding how it works. Does the Yubikey replace 2FA thru FreeOTP+ or is it an extra authentication to add on when you log in somewhere?
