Do you need a custom ROM for to get the best privacy experience on an Android phone?

So nomrally I stick to phones that support Lineage OS. However this is problematic as support for phones isn't predictable at all, sometimes a phone a is no longer updated, and sometimes a phone is never supported period (even though last year's model is).
