Do Schools and Universities Usually Delete Student Accounts after Graduation?

Doing some old, inactive account cleanup, I noticed I couldn't log into my student accounts that the schools set up for me. Ideally I'd like to delete my inactive accounts and some are tied to those emails. Do schools usually delete alumni accounts after graduation, or do they delete them to save data space?
