Discord: What are ways to optimize privacy while still using it?

There are lots of posts on here talking about Discord alternatives, but not any (from what I can see) giving advice to those who still use it for one reason or another. Note: For the sake of consistency and making this thread as useful to as many people as possible, assume that this is for a more common use case for the everyday privacy-conscious person. AKA, we aren't protecting from goverments or aiming for complete anonymity here.
