[Data Privacy Research Question] Bad sign if I can't find my desired topic in the literature?

I'm a second year CS PhD student, and I'm working on a data privacy project with my advisor. We are both new-ish to data privacy and don't know the state of the field beyond the fact that differential privacy is kind of the new thing (I did mainly optimization as did my advisor, but we thought it would be interesting if we could assess how private publicly available physiological data is and how different algorithms affect subject privacy).
