'CCTV' - a misnomer

The massive surveillance under which we live is so often benignly labelled to lull us into accepting, validating and even applauding its use. CCTV is a misnomer. It belongs to a time when video footage was held on bulky tapes and the system was confined to one place. Now, cameras are often networked - not 'closed circuit' at all. And they're not 'TV'. Let's call them what they are: public webcams - or spy cameras.
